CONCRETE SPALLING REPAIRS
WHAT IS CONCRETE SPALLING?
Concrete spalling or concrete cancer is caused by rusting or corroding steel reinforcement within a concrete structure.
As the steel reinforcing corrodes the ferrous oxide created takes up approximately eight times the volume of the parent steel and the concrete surface get pushed off or ‘spalled’.
TWO MAIN CAUSES OF CONCRETE SPALLING
Chlorides (salts) in coastal environments are absorbed into the concrete and an electrochemical reaction occurs resulting in corrosion of the steel reinforcement.
Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide present in the air penetrates concrete and the steel reinforcement in this affected area loses its protective layer allowing corrosion to take place over time.
REPAIR STRATEGIES
MCS Remedial use advanced repair systems to ensure long term structural integrity is restored to the affected reinforced concrete.
We are committed to not only repairing existing areas of spalling but also addressing the cause and offering a range of preventative measures to prevent further spalling of the concrete leading to costly repairs in the future.
